What reason was given for your ban?

I didn’t get any email or anything, Instagram just removed my account saying it “violated the guidelines.”

Why do you think your post(s) was censored?

I had self-harm scars on my arms, upper thighs and abdomen. It wouldn’t be the first time Instagram has censored my posts for having visible scars either.

Were you able to appeal and what was the response?

I did, but I never heard anything back.

What effect has your experience of censorship had on you?

It made me feel quite hurt, and almost let down.

Scars are something I, and many other people cannot change, so for that to be considered ‘harmful’ under social media’s guidelines is very hurtful.

What’s one thing you want people to know about this topic?

Regardless of what Instagram or any other social media platform says, scars are nothing to be ashamed of, and they’re not something you have to keep hidden away either. They’re just a reminder that you’re strong enough to push through what caused them in the first place.
