Bloody Good Period/Sam Dawood/Rachel Grocott

NAME: Rachel Grocott
PLATFORM & USERNAME: @bloodygoodperiod
CENSORSHIP: Collaborator was shadow banned – we were temporarily blocked from posting on our accounts – admins also received warnings on our personal accounts.

What reason was given for your ban?

We were only told that we had ‘violated community standards’ but not any specifics.

Why do you think your post(s) was censored?

We believe that a fundraising auction of a large glittery tampon sculpture was the reason for censorship.

Were you able to appeal and what was the response?

Yes – we appealed via the app but heard nothing. We also had senior contacts at Facebook and Instagram but they could not tell us the reason for censorship; they even tried to tell us that their teams were small and didn’t have the resource to help us.

What effect has your experience of censorship had on you?

It directly impacted fundraising at a key time of year for our charity.

What’s one thing you want people to know about this topic?

Who or what is it that’s approving – or blocking – discussions and art around the bodies of women and people who menstruate? We have written more on this here: https://www.bloodygoodperiod.com/post/bloody-blocked
