Ísold Halldórudóttir
NAME: Ísold Halldórudóttir
CENSORSHIP: Shadow, account & content ban
What reason was given for your ban?
Posts/Stories removed for nudity or sexual activity and going against Instagram’s guidelines.
Why do you think your post(s) was censored?
Fatphobia.
Were you able to appeal and what was the response?
I’ve always tried to appeal the stories/posts that were removed but never heard anything back. I had my account removed and was never given an answer as to why it was taken down.
What effect has your experience of censorship had on you?
It’s always a constant fear that my account will be removed again after having it be done once before. Whenever I show any type of censored nudity I fear that it will be reported or taken down by Instagram because of their fatphobia.
A lot of my work is based on body positivity and showcasing my body in ways the media and society disapprove of.
Not being able to promote/share my work hinders me from getting other opportunities and it discourages me to stay active, which is incredibly important if you want to grow your platform.
I rely heavily on the community that I’ve worked hard to build on Instagram and the idea of having to start all over again, gives me anxiety not to mention it takes away any hopes of expanding my career as a model, artist and activist.
What’s one thing you want people to know about this topic?
How fatphobia can affect people’s lives and careers, and how challenging it feels to be rejected by a platform that’s supposed to help you share your work.
